We’re located in Dafoe Terrace, a registered historic building in Victoria Park.
Our office is nestled within the historic Dafoe Terrace at 1204 3 Street SE — a Georgian Revival heritage building constructed in 1910 and distinguished by its red‑brick façade, dormer windows, sandstone trim, and century‑old character.
Situated in Calgary’s iconic Victoria Park, this registered historic landmark stands at the northern edge of the Stampede grounds, with designated client parking and easy access for client meetings away from the congestion of downtown.
OUR TEAM
John Amonson, MBA, CIM, TEP, R.F.P.
President
John received his Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1980 and his MBA in 1986. He completed his Chartered Financial Planner designation in 1990, the Registered Financial Planner designation in 1997, and his Trust and Estate Practitioner designation in 2004.
He is a past President of the Institute of Advanced Financial Planners National Board and has served on the Board of Directors of the Southern Alberta Chapter of the Canadian Association of Financial Planners and the Calgary Estate Planning Council. John also spent 13 years in the Trust industry with National Trust, Canada Trust, and Royal Trust.
John is an audiophile and will often spend an entire evening listening to vinyl in his record room. Offsetting that somewhat individualistic pursuit, he loves travelling with his wife Nancy in their beloved and meticulously maintained 1991 Westphalia camper van.
Taylor Amonson, MBA, CFP, CIM
Vice President
Taylor comes to Unbiased Financial Services Inc. from the banking industry, where he spent the early part of his career with the Royal Bank of Canada. During his time with RBC, Taylor was awarded the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation.
His formal education includes a BA from the University of Victoria, which involved a one-year exchange at the University of East Anglia. He also holds an MBA with Distinction from Edinburgh Business School. Taylor currently sits as Vice President on the Board of Directors of the Sir Winston Churchill Society of Calgary.
When away from the office, he might be found sitting next to the fire reading a history book, fly fishing for trout, or working a coulee in search of upland game. What brings Taylor the most joy is spending time with his wife Kelly and their two adventurous daughters: particularly camping in the summer, and skiing in the winter.
Yan Li, CFA, CFP
Chief Investment Officer and Portfolio Manager
Yan is Chief Investment Officer and Portfolio Manager of Unbiased Portfolio Management Inc. Yan holds two degrees from Queen’s University; receiving his Bachelor of Commerce (Honors) with First Class Distinction in 2011 and his Bachelor of Arts with Distinction in Computing and Information Science in 2013.
Yan previously held the position of Portfolio Manager at Ross Smith Asset Management Inc., where he worked for 5 years prior to joining Unbiased Portfolio Management Inc. During his time at Ross Smith, Yan successfully completed the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation. In his spare time, Yan enjoys gourmet cooking.
Kelly Amonson, MSc
Associate
On receipt of her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Calgary, Kelly spent the beginning of her career as a Professional Geologist. After five years of reservoir exploration and exploitation, Kelly was awarded the Saltire Scholarship, which she accepted in pursuit of her Master of Science degree at Heriot-Watt University, graduating with Distinction.
On her return from Scotland, Kelly took time off work to raise her two girls, and then pivoted into the world of print media, ultimately working as the Managing Editor of Dote Magazine. All the while, she has continued her pursuit of higher learning, most recently completing the Product Management Program – Specializing in Digital Marketing, from the University of Calgary.
